Why Not All Kiln-Dried Firewood Is Alike

When it comes to heating your home or gathering around a cozy fire, kiln-dried firewood is often considered the gold standard. But just because firewood is labeled “kiln-dried” doesn’t mean it’s all created equal. At Anderson Timber Harvesting, we understand that the drying process, wood species, and overall quality can vary widely—and those differences matter.

Kiln-drying is a controlled process that reduces the moisture content of firewood to below 20 percent, making it easier to light, cleaner to burn, and less likely to produce creosote buildup in your chimney. However, not every supplier uses the same standards. Some only dry their wood for a short period, just long enough to meet the minimum requirement. Others may use lower temperatures or overloaded kilns, resulting in wood that feels dry on the outside but retains moisture deep inside. That can lead to frustrating fires that won’t stay lit and emit more smoke than heat.

The type of wood used also plays a major role. Hardwood species like oak, maple, and ash burn longer and produce more heat than softer species. Some companies mix in lower-grade wood to cut costs, which means you end up paying for firewood that burns faster and delivers less value. Sourcing matters, too—wood harvested and processed locally tends to be fresher, cleaner, and better suited for our regional climate.

At Anderson Timber Harvesting, we kiln-dry our firewood using a high-heat process that ensures consistent moisture reduction through every log. We use premium hardwoods, cut and split to standard lengths, and thoroughly screened to remove debris. That means you get clean, reliable, high-performance firewood that’s ready to go the moment it’s delivered.

If you’ve ever struggled with slow-starting fires or disappointing heat output, the culprit might be low-grade kiln-dried wood. Choosing a trusted, local supplier like Anderson Timber Harvesting ensures your firewood lives up to the promise of quality, consistency, and warmth—every time.
